Helling 7

Restaurant Helling 7 is located on the IJ in Amsterdam. The construction is circular and situated on a slope that is part of the Damen shipyard. Owner Daan Bonsen, along with Maverick Bouw, Jasper Goossen, and Tom Veldhuis, conceived the concept. Helling 7 is an old wharf canteen in a modern guise. The restaurant with a terrace is located on a flat roof where boats used to be repaired.

From Helling 7, you have a view of both the IJ and the Kraanspoor. In the construction of the restaurant, as many materials as possible were reused, making the concept sustainable. ‘Almost entirely using steel remnants, old welding towers, and old wooden panels from boats, this enormous structure was erected during the pandemic,’ Bonsen explains. The wooden floor is made from a former ship’s deck, and the pillars are old jacks that supported ships when they were launched into the water.

OPEN KITCHEN

The restaurant has an open kitchen. The chefs here prepare the dishes almost entirely over an open fire and without the use of gas. The ‘white brigade’ is led by head chef Carl Gast. In addition to an extensive food menu, the restaurant also offers a cocktail menu. This has a nautical theme and is curated by Tim Lefevre, bar manager of the cocktail bar Door74 in Amsterdam.

At Helling 7, guests can enjoy food, drinks, and events, and experience an energetic vibe throughout the evening. All within a contemporary interior with styling that perfectly complements the concept.
